The Rehabilitation project of Tondano Lake Area started on November 2008. It builds on the project "The management and restoration of water flows in the basin flows the Kali Prog / Sapi and Tondano in Indonesia" in the period between 2003 and 2005, funded by the Czech international development cooperation under the auspices of the Ministry Environment. As a result of this project was prepared digital maps of the GIS databases, mapping of critical areas and the analysis of priority areas for intervention and rehabilitation programs at the municipal and podpovodí Tondano in the lake district in Minahasa Manado municipality in the river basin Tondano. Another part of this project was to inventory natural resources, including geomorphology, geology, soil types and land use potential of the level of administrative units and municipalities in the scale 1: 250 000 These results are extensively used for the current project and for mapping at a scale of 1: 50 000 Map of critical areas such as the 2003 has contributed to the rapid identification of demonstration plots, which were selected for the current project activities.
Based on this previous study for the Ministry of Environment CR in the area there are 17 500 ha of critical lands in Tondano watershed, which is 30% of total watershed area. The critical degraded areas contribute to high sedimentation, high run off and flooding, land slides and flash floods in the Tondano lake area.
The project aims to rehabilitate degraded areas around the lake Tondano and appropriate procedures for reclaiming these areas to reduce the effects of soil erosion, which has resulted in increased sediment and thus reduce the depth of the lake in the district of Minahasa Tondano. The results of mapping studies of long-term project on the diffusion of critical areas and field verification, it was found that when there is no reduction in erosion and sedimentation in the lake Tondano, lake threatens to fill all 38 deposit.
In Indonesia, a major source of serious erosion and catastrophic flooding extent deemed just degraded critical area. According to the local Ministry of Forestry (2001 and 2002) in Indonesia from 22 to 36 major river basins, where a critical mass of degraded areas are more than 20% of the watershed. Tondáno River Basin lakes are amongst the most critical watershed. Lake Tondano is the "heart" of North Sulawesi, representing the source of water supply for a large proportion of the population, is also a source of water for gravity irrigation of crops - mainly rice and fish is an important source of production and the center of cage-reared fish of northern Sulawesi. Equally important has been his role in electric energy in a cascade of dams under the lake. Tondano lake basin is a priority for the importance of water conservation and maintain good water quality in the lake.
One of the most important activities of the project was to update the information on the status and condition of critical areas of degraded soils and their current use, the development of rehabilitation methods and land use plans and determine the agriculture, forestry and technical solutions and restoration of the landscape and create conditions for local processing of agricultural and forestry products, protection of natural resources. This project creates conditions for improvement of socioeconomic conditions in target areas, implementation of the management and sustainable use of water and land resources in the lake basin with a special focus on the Minahasa district.
The project focused on the major recommendations of the selection and efficient, but locally acceptable systems of crop rotation and crop, which will improve the use of soil, reducing erosion and sedimentation and increase income of rural population. New crops and crop rotation systems will be demonstrated in the final phase of the project, 40 ha of demonstration plots.
Throughout the duration of the project have been identified appropriate demonstration area, where they established new systems of crop rotation, to represent the project goals. In all these areas was discussed with local farmers, has developed a detailed survey of addressing socio-economic situation, focusing on agricultural and forestry production in the area to identify the main concerns of farmers regarding the selection of suitable crops and crop systems, the rehabilitation and establishment of economic forest plan. Selection of demonstration areas during the project changed several times, and especially from proprietary reasons, but also because of the enthusiasm of local people, their willingness to cooperate for reasons of re-evaluation of priorities for the provision of demonstration plots. In 2010 it was finally identified twenty demonstration sites covering the territory of four villages, which constitute the village pilot project. This is a community Makalonsouw, Touliangoki, Kombi and Tambelan. The total area of all twenty-one demonstration area is 43.16 hectares.
The long term objective of the project is to reduce rural poverty in the region, which previously belonged to the economically more developed areas with small scale poverty. The prerequisite for successful project implementation, implementation of training programs in the inventory of forest ecosystems and rehabilitation of critical areas. Along with it is important to the success of the project, an action plan for rehabilitation and establish guidelines for the creation of the forest management plan, which will be used in the Czech experience and knowledge of projects not only in this country but also in tropical areas of Southeast Asia. The most important prerequisite for the success of the project and its future sustainability is to establish close cooperation to obtain the interest of local carriers view real demonstration of pilot farmers and farmers' cooperative which has been achieved, the project met with great success and it cooperates actively with number of farmers.
